Philosophy of M. Patricia Roth

Whether the subject is landscapes, water reflections, or orbs transiting a mysterious space, glowing light and unexpected shadows are the dominant theme in Roth's work.

“One of the biggest pleasures I find in life is the act of discovery. The opening of a new day, the hidden treasures waiting around the bend in the road, the source of that reflection, what object cast that massive shadow? And my second biggest pleasure is to capture these moments on canvas. I try to recreate these moments with my own imagination.

I do not aim for photographic interpretation, my camera does that for me. I sketch with my camera. I analyze the photos in my studio and study what it was that made me want to capture this image. It's usually the shadows.

Which leads to one of my philosophies of life. What we do in life, lives on longer than do we." - M Patricia Roth

My Education: Painting with the Masters.

"The highlight of my art education was being accepted into the Masters Art Workshop in the summer of 1987 at Southampton College, Long Island.

I was one of thirty out of over a thousand applicants to be accepted into the 30-day program. It was an intense 24/7 being mentored by some of the most prestigious artists of the day—Larry Rivers, Roy Lichtenstein, Jackie Windsor, Eric Fischel, and April Gornick—to name just a few. They would come to our studios, critique our work, and then we would visit them working in their studios.

When one of them said to me, "Okay, you can paint, now just find the right subject...” I thought I had died and gone to heaven."
